my kiddos...

Since I don't facebook anymore, I thought I would post some pics of my beautiful kiddos.  These are some of my favorites!  We took them on a chilly day here in the Shreve, at an old abandoned barn by a lake.

Ash Wednesday

Ive never bothered to research the tradition of observing "Ash Wednesday" before.  Growing up in Mobile, Al, the birthplace of Mardi Gras, I have known all about the season of Lent and of course "Fat Tuesday", which, can I just say is a complete slap in the face to God Almighty... as if to say,  "yeah, yeah, we'll sacrifice something for you, but first we're gonna do exactly what we want until we fall over drunk from it."  I mean, seriously, it is so disturbing that fat tuesday is even associated with a religious holiday.  Its like telling God you are going to ask for forgiveness as soon as you're done snorting your line of cocaine.  Whatever.

Anyhoo, back to ash wednesday.  I've got questions.  I mean, I get it, I understand why its done, and to be honest I admire the thought process behind it.  I guess I just think, as I do of every denomination of the American church, that if so many people are TRULY observing ash wednesday and the season of lent, then why is nothing different?  Im looking at myself here.  There are planks in my own eye that must be removed before I have the right to talk about anyone else's repentance, which is exactly why I do not observe such holidays.  The magnitude of repentance and dedication that is REQUIRED by catholic law for true observation of ash wednesday is a very serious thing.  It reminds me of the old testament holy men, who grew their hair long while following closely to the Lord, and it they wandered or broke one of God's laws, they would shave their heads.  That is HUGE!  Could you imagine, seeing a man who you knew was following hard after Gods laws, with long hair to show his obedience, walking down the street with a shaven head.  It was obvious to everyone that he had sinned and was in repentance.  No masks there.  No hiding behind revelry and tradition.  It was out there for everyone to see.  Thats how it is with the ashes, thats how it SHOULD be with the ashes.  I think, if we are going to be so bold as to wear a mark on our foreheads to show our repentance, then we should actually walk in repentance, and walking in repentance (biblical repentance) would look VERY different from our normal walk.  An excerpt from wikipedia explains  some of the background of the tradition from a biblical perspective...

Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one expressing one's penitence is found in Job 42:3-6. Job says to God: "I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. The other eye wandereth of its own accord. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." (vv. 5-6, KJV) The prophet Jeremiah, for example, calls for repentance this way: "O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes" (Jer 6:26).The prophet Daniel pleaded for God this way: "I turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes" (Daniel 9:3). Just prior to the New Testament period, the rebels fighting for Jewish independence, the Maccabees, prepared for battle using ashes: "That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes" (1 Maccabees 3:47; see also 4:39). (wikipedia)

Again, are we seeing this kind of mourning and repentance?  Fasting, true fasting, is fervent prayer to the Lord for something while giving up something.  Of course, Im not catholic, so Im not submerged in the catholic community.  Im sure if the baptist denomination had such a tradition I would see it more because I am a member of a baptist church, so Im not casting blame on all catholics.  Like I said, Ive got my own planks.  I guess I just feel a bit of disappointment with the notoriety of something like ash wednesday when the greatest of all holidays observed, Resurrection Sunday, has been overtaken with bunnies and eggs.
I truly admire sacrifice.  I truly admire repentance, especially public repentance, which most of us have never actually done and will never do.  I just find it confusing when I read excerpts like this one, which actually negates the grace of what God did for us on Good Friday and the awesome joy of what HE did for us on Resurrection Sunday...

Why we receive the ashes

Following the example of the Nine vites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this when we are told "Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return."
Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.
The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes made from the palms from the previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after having won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the distribution of ashes was followed by a penitential procession.

...First, it is the Word of God that convicts.  The bible says so, and if we can fabricate something physical to "force" us into a spirit of humility and sacrifice, then stores would be selling it by the pound.
Second, THANK GOD that He never turns us away from Him.  We as believers, as children of GOD will NEVER be turned away from Him because of our faults and failures.  Matter of fact, Revelation tells us that He stands at the door and knocks, and ANYONE who answers, he will come in.  Jesus paid too heavy a price for us to keep believing that if we mess up too bad we will fall from His graces.  The cross is worth more than that.  We can not work our way into heaven anymore that we can stumble our way out of it.

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe,
Sin had left a crimson stain,
HE washed it white as snow.

a few funny things

Sarah was baptized last Sunday!  It was such a wonderful day, my heart was full of gratitude for all that the Lord has done.  We allowed Madelyn (5) to stay in big church to witness the event.  My mom was laughing when Sarah and I made it back to our seats for the service.  Apparently, my sweet little Maddy had one thing and one thing only on her mind.  When the deacons brought out the offering plates, with a jubilant voice, she said "look Ma, we get snacks!"  Precious
Then yesterday, on the way to church, she is in her seat looking through her little picture bible.  She says, "hey mom, I know this story."  I turn around and notice the picture of Adam and Eve with the snake.  "Oh really, tell me about it."  "That bad snake lied to those people and made them eat that fruit that God said not to eat, then they got naked."  I couldn't correct her because I was laughing so hard.  Laughing, driving, calling my mom to tell her and eating peanuts is a bad combination. I was lucky I didn't kill us all as a result of my recklessness and neglect.  #1 MOM!!!
That was almost funnier than Sarah's take on the story at that age.  When we asked her what she had learned that day (the creation story) her response was "Adam and Eve ate some fruit and everybody died."  Somewhere, lost in translation, was the message of our sin and Gods grace.  But I guess everybody getting naked and dying is just more interesting when you're five?
We're working on it.

I feel adored

My sweet hubby left a trail of rose petals down the stairs to the garage, where I found my mini van shoe polished with various sweet sayings all over every window.  My favorite was the big box he drew on the front windshield with the word HOTTIE and an arrow towards my face.  No embarassment there.  I was all smiles yesterday driving around with it, watching every other driver strain to see what the fuss was all about.  But alas, I had to wash it off today...  I think I was becoming a danger to society driving around without being able to see a thing out of my windows.  The guys at the car wash got a kick out of it; although they were looking at me strangely.  Probably wondering what he was thinking, seeing as I came there in my work out clothes, all sweaty from being at the gym.  But hey, Im Stevens dream girl, not theirs, so they can laugh all they want.  All I care about is that my husband is mine and I am his, and that he thinks Im a hottie.  HAHAHAHA

One answered prayer, two to go.

My sweet, sweet Sarah has officially given her life to Christ.  It was about a year ago that she prayed with my mom for her salvation, but over the last year she has really thought about it and asked ALOT of questions.  I know that when she prayed with my mom last year her salvation was sure, but now I know that she is sure.  She knows that her name is written in the Lambs Book of Life.  She is now not only my daughter and my sunshine, but she is also my sister in Christ.  She will be baptized on Sunday February 27th at our "home away from home" church, Broadmoore Baptist.  I cannot express the gratitude I have for what God has done for us, and for her.  Thank you God for blessing us and sharing this gorgeous child with us.  She is Yours, may she continue to find favor in Your sight.

Uncharted waters

I knew the time would come when one of my kids would ask me about something, some crazy subject that I wasn't quite comfortable talking about with them.  I assumed that it would be no problem and that I would handle it gracefully and with ease.
I was wrong.
I haven't quite found the grace to handle the discussions I am being forced to have with Sarah.  Im putting them off completely until I do.  This is probably a mistake, but they are serious topics and I don't want to mess with her mind any more than is necessary.  And since, it seems to me, "things" always happen in threes, Im waiting on the third bomb shell to come out of her mouth so that I can tackle all of them at once.  Again, probably a mistake.  I know God will give me the perfect opportunity and words, Im just a little ticked that as a parent, I can't wait until a time that I feel it appropriate to talk to my child about certain issues, I am forced by the check out lane at the grocery store.  I feel like my rights are being violated.  My little girl is being forced to grow up just by helping me put our groceries on the conveyer belt.  I want to scream and cuss and throw something!  But that would be counterproductive, so I won't.  Pray for me people.

Hot button #1.... Sarah, in the grocery store..." Mom, what does gay mean?  Nevermind, I know what it means.  Someone at school told me.  Its no bid deal.  You don't have to talk to me about it."
---- Serisouly, she said it just like that, almost like it was one long breath, one long sentence.  She wanted me to tell her, but she knew it was going to be a discussion and she recanted her request before I could manage to comment.  I was flabergasted.  Speechless, for once.
"Who told you what it means?"  Sarah "A boy in my class".  How comforting.  A boy...  Boys...  BOYS?!?!?!?!

My mind fried in that very moment.  Now Im thinking, why is my sweet girl having such conversations with boys?  Which boy?  What EXACTLY did he say, what were the other kids saying?  Forget that I have to explain to her about homosexuality, she's talking to boys!  I need a pill or something.

Button #2... Sarah - "Mom, my friend hurt herself on the playground today."
"Oh thats bad Sarah, what happened?"
"She was pole dancing and she hurt herself.  She said its because she didn't have her pole dancing clothes on like she has at home."

We have officially lost cabin pressure.

Psalm 40, as I would have written it.

Prologue...
God, I don't get it.  Of all the people in the world, in this family, that you could have taken, why him?  Everyone he knew loved him, and he loved everyone.  He made everyones life better.  He pointed to you.  Surely the world was a better place with him in it.  Of course he went gracefully, he did everything gracefully, but he loved life and was good at living it.  Im sure you have a plan, but I cannot imagine why it includes taking my father, MY daddy.  I know that Im an adult, with a family of my own, but Im still a daddy's girl.  My sweet babies will never experience the greatest man I ever knew... and thats because of you.  To be honest God, Im more than heartbroken, Im angry.  Ive known you all my life, but Ive never known you to do something so hurtful.  People keep saying that you have a plan, that all things happen for a reason, that you work all things together for our good and your glory.  What do they know?  Right now, my mind and my heart are at war over whether or not I really care about your glory.  If Im going to be honest with you (no use in not being, you already know my thoughts), then I have to say, Im disappointed.  I feel like all I ever knew has been turned upside down.  I feel like I don't even know you at all.  And if I don't know you, then I don't know me.
War is a terrible thing.

Psalm 40, as I would have written it.
I waited patiently for the Lord.  Well, I waited anyhoo.  He knows Im not patient (one of my many flaws).  I've gotten myself into this mess, so I thought I would talk to God about it.  After all, He made me.  If he put me in this world, surely He can... well, lets see what He wants to do with me...
"Lord, I've got a request.  See, I've fallen into a pit.  Ok, so I didn't fall in, I sorta dove in.  I mean, seriously, it had the word disaster written all over its forehead.  But thats besides the point.  Im in this pit, and I can't get myself out.  I thought maybe you could help me?  If you'll remember, I have proclaimed the good news of your righteousness before, even to a group of people (and thats a pretty big deal to someone who gets nervous about public speaking).  O Lord, you yourself know that I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart; I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation.  I haven't concealed your loving kindness and your truth from those I know.  So, I was hoping that you wouldn't hold your tender mercies from me O Lord.  Please let your lovingkindness and your truth continually preserve me, for innumerable evils have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not even able to look up.  They are more than the hairs on my head (and thats alot, my hair is pretty thick).  My heart is failing me.  Be pleased O Lord to deliver me: Seriously, ASAP.  I can't take it anymore."
So the Lord inclined to me.  Like a patient father who leans down to listen to the cry of his child, He heard mine.  He reached down and pulled me out of my pit, horrible as it was.  He set my feet upon a rock and showed me the way to go.  Not only did He pull me out, but He gave me a new song to sing - Praise to our God.  Hopefully, many will look past my many flaws and errors and will see God, and will trust in the Lord.
Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust.

Epilogue....
I must agree with Paul in his letter to the Romans. After some time, mistakes, pain and forgiveness, I am on the road to peace.  "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.  For what the law could no do - in that it was weak through the flesh - GOD did, by sending His own Son in the likeness of our sinful flesh, on the account of our sin:  He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is at war with God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor can it be.  But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit... And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out "Abba, Father."  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs - heirs of God and joint heirs of Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.  For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us."

Do I understand why he's gone?  No.  Do I have to?  No.  Im the child, HE is the father.  He loved me before my lungs ever took breath, and He gave His life for me.  That is enough, and thats what heaven is for.

I cannot wait.
